Trade fair report WOP Dubai: 13-15 November2016
22 - 12 - 2016
From 13 to 15 November, Dubai was the scene of the annual World of Perishables (WOP). Pomuni was again present in cooperation with VLAM with a beautiful stand focussing on Belgian vegetables, fruit and potatoes.
Quality above quantity
The 8th edition of this trade fair was fairly calm. WOP does however remain the place to be for the Middle East for the potato, vegetable and fruit trade. In addition, the trade fair is visited by the most important retailers and importers. The VLAM stand was very striking: for a few days the 25 m² stand in the well-known “Premium Quality, Perfect Taste” style formed the home base for Belgian exporters of PFV products.
Market full of challenges
The Belgian export of fresh vegetables and fruit to the United Arab Emirates is still limited, but VLAM is seeing bigger volumes of fruit going out there, mainly apples and pears. For vegetables, after a poorer year in 2015, VLAM is again recording higher volumes for the first 7 months of 2016. Mainly carrots and turnips are being exported to the UAE.
There are only a few European suppliers active in this market. The UAE imports fruit mainly from South Africa, Iran, Iraq, The Philippines, Pakistan, India and Egypt. For vegetables, it’s the same story with India, Iran, Jordan, China and Pakistan as the main suppliers.
The next edition of WOP Dubai will take place from 23 October to 25 October 2017 in the Dubai Trade Centre.
